Rio de Janeiro is the second largest economy in Brazil, only behind São Paulo, and one of the most industrialized areas of the country.

 

The state of Rio de Janeiro has all its east coast bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, which contributes to the large number of beaches and sights. Its capital, the city of Rio de Janeiro, known as the “Wonderful City”, was the capital of Brazil between 1763 and 1960 and is the largest international tourist destination in Brazil, Latin America and the Southern Hemisphere, being the Brazilian city better known abroad.

 

The Rio de Janeiro is one of the main economic centers, cultural and financial of the country, is internationally known for several cultural and landscape icons such as Sugar Loaf, Corcovado Mountain blessed with the statue of Christ the Redeemer, the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema and Barra da Tijuca, Maracanã Stadium, the Botanical Garden, the bohemian neighborhood of Lapa and its arches, the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro, the forests of Tijuca and Pedra Branca, Quinta da Boa Vista, the National Library, the island of Paquetá, the famous New Year’s Eve in Copacabana, Rio’s carnival, Bossa Nova and Samba.

 

Among the main of the state museums are the Imperial Museum of Petrópolis, National Museum of Fine Arts, the National History Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Tomorrow, the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum (Oscar Niemeyer project, where through windows you can still enjoy a panoramic view of Rio de Janeiro, Sugar Loaf and Guanabara Bay), Museum of Naval Aviation (only one of its kind in Brazil), Copacabana Fort and the City of Arts (complex which houses the largest concert hall in Latin America).

 

The gastronomy of Rio de Janeiro has as typical dish the feijoada, which is black beans and pork meat, preferably accompanied by a delicious caipirinha, a drink of cachaça, lemon, sugar and ice. On the beaches, be sure to try the very traditional coconut water, Matte iced tea and the famous biscuit Globo!

 

In addition to its capital, the state of Rio de Janeiro has several interesting destinations for tourism, as the cities of Paraty, Angra dos Reis, the ones located in the Lakes Region: Búzios, Cabo Frio and Arraial do Cabo (internationally known for scuba diving) and mountains cities: Petrópolis (the Imperial city), Itaipava, Teresópolis and Penedo.
